The MEFMI Candidate Fellows workshop which started today in Kigali, Rwanda is the first in a series of workshops and events which will see the Candidate Fellows become experts in their areas of specialization. The workshop was officially opened by Prof. Thomas Kigabo who is the Chief Economist at the National Bank of Rwanda.
The Fellows Development Programme (FDP) is a unique programme which aims to build a sustainable critical mass of regional experts in macroeconomic and financial management. The Programme was conceived to address the capacity needs of the region in terms of the development of local and regional expertise.
The workshop which will run from 7 to 15 September 2015 is being attended by 15 Candidate Fellows and facilitated by regional experts in research methodologies and report writing.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Kigabo told the 14 Fellows attending the workshop to embrace the opportunity that MEFMI and their institutions has given them to be part of the growing network of experts under the MEFMI brand. He said the National Bank of Rwanda views MEFMI as one of the best capacity building institutions that the Bank turns to for expert services. He said the home-grown solutions that MEFMI offers are extremely relevant and are held in high regard.
MEFMI Executive Director, Dr Fundanga, also addressed the Candidate Fellows. He pointed out that the Candidate Fellows should view the orientation workshop as the beginning of the 18 months journey towards becoming experts. He stated that the workshop will provide them a platform to enhance their research skills as they prepare to become experts in various fields of specialization.
Dr Fundanga also emphasised that as client institutions had committed to the Fellows Development Programme by releasing the Candidate Fellows, it was critical that all the Candidate Fellows be accessible and increase their visibility amongst client institutions in the MEFMI region.
The Fellows attending the workshop are from the three main Programmes – Macroeconomic Management, Debt Management and Financial Sector Management.
