MEFMI supports the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency to Setup the National Account Database System

Critical capacity gaps in real sector statistics in the MEFMI region arise from, among others, the absence of flash estimates which provide an early picture of the economy, as well as the lack of comprehensive, timely and consistent national accounts statistics. The 2008 System of National Accounts requires the countries to compile national accounts on a quarterly basis.

The current economic and political context in the MEFMI region has also led to an increase in the demand for accurate indicators that provide timely, comprehensive information about the evolution of the economy on a short-term basis. The National Account Database System (NADABAS) has proved to be a useful instrument in ameliorating these shortcomings. Using the NADABAS, the compilation of quarterly national accounts (QNA) is done using an Excel-based database. As such, it provides an affordable tool to compile QNA, leading to improved quality of statistics.

As part of its capacity building activities, MEFMI supported the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) in the compilation of quarterly GDP by setting up the NADABAS from 13 – 24 February 2023. This follows the initial work done during two MEFMI training workshops on QNA, from 6 to 17 June 2022, and 21 – 25 November 2022 respectively. The objective of the mission was to impart knowledge and enhance the skills of ZIMSTAT officials on the setup and design of the Excel files and their links using the NADABAS in compiling quarterly GDP, annual GDP, as well as Supply Use Tables.

Twenty-seven (27) ZIMSTAT officials participated in the training. Of the 27 participants, eight (30 percent) were female. The training was facilitated by two (2) resource persons, Mr. Senei Molapo, a MEFMI Graduate Fellow and MEFMI Programme Manager, and Mr. Jan Redeby, an independent Consultant, and a national accounts specialist from Sweden.
