MEFMI and DPF Uganda Deliver a Workshop on Bank Resolution for EAC Deposit Insurers

In a collaborative effort, MEFMI and the Deposit Protection Fund of Uganda  hosted an impactful workshop on bank resolution funding for Financial Safety Net (FSN) stakeholders within the East Africa Community (EAC).  This  event took place from April 14 to 17, 2025, at the  Lake Victoria Serena Resort in Kigo, Uganda.  The EAC is a prominent regional intergovernmental organisation founded in 1999 currently comprises eight Partner States: The Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The workshop brought together representatives from EAC central banks, deposit insurance agencies, and finance ministries, to foster robust discussions on contemporary bank restructuring techniques and the development of resolution funding frameworks. Targeting mid- to senior-level officials, the event aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of effective resolution strategies that align with international standards, ultimately leading to stronger operational frameworks in the region.

The workshop was officiated by Dr. Julia Clare Olima Oyet, Chief Executive Officer of DPF Uganda. The closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Patrick Onen Ezaga, DPF’s Director of Communications, and Ms. Margaret Kaggwa Kasule, Executive Director of Legal Services at the Bank of Uganda.

A total of 52 participants attended the workshop, including heads of resolution authorities, financial stability experts, and officials from ministries of finance, representing Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania. Notably, 22 of the 52 attendees were women, reflecting a commendable 42% female representation alongside 58% male representation.
