The Bank of Zambia (BOZ) recognised the need to uncover and address barriers that hinder its senior managers from active participation in gender mainstreaming. In this regard, the BOZ needed a programme and strategy to address the challenges which militate against its ability to realise its gender goals. Therefore, the BOZ found it imperative that its Senior Management be trained on Strategic Leadership in Inclusive Finance and Transformative Skills. This training was deemed critical as it will ensure that BOZ is gender-responsive. It will also put the Bank in a better position to influence the adoption of inclusive financial products and services throughout the country.
The course was conducted by the MEFMI Business Development Unit from 28 June to 9 July 2021. The course, which was attended by 90 BOZ Senior Management, was designed to assist the Bank to bridge existing gaps on the implementation of gender mainstreaming at the Bank. The main focus was on key concepts on gender mainstreaming, which included, among others gender responsive central banking; gender aware macroeconomic policies; inclusive and gender responsive financial inclusion strategies. Focus was also on demonstrating how to operationalise and mainstream gender within the Bank, as well as outlining specific roles that Senior Managers should play in this regard.
Participants are expected to use the knowledge acquired from this course to support the BOZ’s efforts to advance the gender mainstreaming agenda. This is expected to culminate in the development of a participatory Gender Mainstreaming Programme for the BOZ and the accompanying Monitoring and Evaluation Framework.
The training was facilitated by three (3) resource persons, namely Dr. Euzobia Baine Mugisha (Director – Gender Mainstreaming Directorate, Makerere University, Uganda); Mr. Samuel Tarinda (Deputy Director and Gender Expert, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe) and Dr. Sehliselo Mpofu of the MEFMI Secretariat.
