The business landscape has been drastically altered by the COVID-19 pandemic which has ravaged the world since its advent in late 2019. For any entity to remain viable and relevant, leadership must respond swiftly and adapt to new ways of doing business. The ability to do this requires leadership that is proactive and insightful of the needs of all its stakeholders. This was one of the issues discussed during a workshop conducted by the MEFMI Business Development Unit (BDU) for senior leaders at FBC Bank.
The virtual workshop which was held from 23 to 25 November 2021 was officially opened by the MEFMI Executive Director, Dr Louis Kasekende. In his opening remarks, Dr Kasekende stated that business leaders need to continuously undergo capacity development, particularly now as management approaches have to be realigned to suit the evolving operating environment.
Dr Kasekende also said that effective leadership requires a thorough understanding of how to positively engage people as a way of responding to challenges with greater sophistication and confidence. He commended FBC Bank for the decision to offer digital banking services. He mentioned that ten (10) years ago it was not imaginable that a bank could serve customers scattered across the globe without them setting foot in a banking hall or handling cash.
The workshop on Leadership and Management Challenges aimed to take participants through the process of effective team leadership. The workshop combined PowerPoint presentations and group sessions covering various topics, and provided knowledge on how strategic and proactive leaders can attend to any changes effectively. The workshop enhanced participants’ knowledge and understanding of leadership challenges and management. They also indicated that they will be interested in a similar activity specifically for Junior Managers.
The workshop was attended by 12 participants, three (3) of whom were female.
