MEFMI conducts an eLearning Course on Introduction to Monetary and Financial Statistics

MEFMI conducted an e-learning course on introduction to Monetary and Financial Statistics from 8–26 May 2023. The main objective of the workshop was to enhance participants’ knowledge on the compilation of MFS (sectoral balance sheets and surveys) for the central banks (CBs), other depository corporations (ODCs), and other financial corporations (OFCs) in accordance with the international standard enshrined in the MFS Manual (MFSM) and Compilation Guide 2016. The workshop also explored innovative data collection methods and sources for the compilation of the statistics.

The availability of MFS is crucial for a better understanding of economic flows. These statistics are also useful for the development of evidence-based policymaking, which is critical for effective and prudent macroeconomic management. However, in the MEFMI region, capacity gaps in the compilation of these statistics, specifically on compiling and reporting, harmonised data for CB, ODC, and OFCs can undermine these efforts.

The workshop targeted mainly junior to middle-level staff responsible for compiling and reporting MFS in Central Banks as well as those who analyse and use these statistics in Ministries of Finance and Statistics Offices. A total of 80 officials from 11 MEFMI countries participated in the workshop. Of the 80 participants, 52 (65 percent) were male while 28 (35 percent) were female. It is MEFMI’s expectation that the workshop increased the participants’ understanding of MFS compilation procedures in line with the latest international compilation standards and that they will utilise the knowledge acquired to adhere to the required methodologies when compiling MFS.

The resource team was made up of Mr. Senei Molapo, MEFMI Programme Manager and Graduate Fellow, Dr Jacob Lungu, Executive Assistant to the Governor of the Bank of Zambia, and Mr. Aquino Chilundo, MFS Analyst in the MFS Division (Statistics Department), Bank of Mozambique and MEFMI Graduate Fellow.
