Virtual Regional Workshop on Bank Resolution and Crisis Management
Background
The COVID-19 shock exposed and amplified pre-existing vulnerabilities in the MEFMI region banking systems, but more recent developments have added fresh layers of complexity. Global monetary tightening and exchange rate volatility have increased funding pressures, while high non-performing loan ratios threaten solvency. Concurrently, the rise of digital banking and cyber threats has underscored operational resilience gaps. Climate-related shocks—such as extreme weather events—are now material credit risks, and the fallout from high-profile bank failures elsewhere has tested cross-border coordination and depositor confidence. Against this backdrop, it is imperative that supervisors within the region adapt crisis management frameworks, enhance early warning and resolution planning, and bolster cooperation with regional deposit insurers and emergency liquidity facilities.
